Well,he has to start using some sort of long weapon soon. And sword is appropriate since anyone he can learn to fight( AIS,ryuu) use swords. Daggers are not appropriate for deep floors, especially when there are massive hordes of monsters and you can't fight everything close combat, especially with a short ranged weapon like a dagger. I mean,do we know any high level adventurers who go to expeditions to deep floors use any short ranged weapons? Tione has kukiri knives but they are long. And bete uses his shoes, yeah? I think he is the only one abnormal there.
Bete uses blades too, i believe he ordered or was given one made by tsubaki colbrande for the 59th floor expedition and also purchased several magic swords from the same smith to power up his flosvirt for a finishing move when he can't find a source to siphon from.
Large kukris are no larger than Hakugen and the Hestia Knife is still a fairly large knife even if more typical than Hakugen. The only way the argument of it is to short is if everyone starts to uses pole weapons. If you are using a sword or a knife and either way you have to get well into the reach of your opponent the difference is of little relevance. The is no rhyme or reason to the equipment that is used from character to character, only the authors whim. As for your hint, there is a far stronger one in the afterword for the Hestia Knife.
There is no cannonical description of Zolas, but basing it of illustrations the blades are roughly 13 inches, Hakugen's is almost 14 inches, so probably rights about the same.
Additionally for Bete to be abnormal there would have to be a standard, there isn't. If the author does decide to side line Bell's current weapons than he is just making more of the plot pointless.
Is a sword a better weapon than a knife? Sure, but a spear is better than a sword and top quality armor better than any of those. None of that matters in fantasy, if the author want the hero to use a knife, he will learn to use a knife just a well as he could use a sword. Besides, in the real fight Bell didn't use the sword at all.
I'm pretty sure that was a different sword (made in the Far East style) that she acquired from one of the other two dead adventures' remains.
Bell has been augmenting the Hestia knife by casting Firebolt into the knife, extending it's length if I recall correctly, perhaps it's only when pairing with Argonaut that he wields a longer weapon for a kill shot. It's also a weapon that was designed to grow alongside Bell, perhaps there's some literal truth to that as well to come.

The sword Bell was using is referred to as "the sword of the dead adventurer." The one Ryuu was using was never referred to by a title. The sword that Ryuu discards in scene is referred to by the same title. Additionally no sword appears in the volume after that point.

Chapter 11 (Yen Press English release)
Page 243 - Bell and Ryuu are fighting at the top of a staircase. Bell is fighting the approaching monsters while Ryuu supports him from the rear. "Without even waiting to see its body crumble into ash, I toss away the cracked nature weapon and immediately draw the sword of the dead adventurer."
FYI this sword is also repeated described as a longsword and at least once it's mentioned as having a nicked blade.
Pages 247 & 248 - While Bell is still fighting, more monsters appear from behind Ryuu catching them in a pincer attack. She turns to face them, fighting back to back with Bell while he continues dealing with the monsters in front of him. The key quote here is in the middle of page 248.
"She placed her hands on the blade at her waist as the lizardmen approached.
It was the steel sword she had taken from the deceased adventurers. It was beautiful, most likely forged by a smith drawn to the weapons of the Far East. Made from materials gathered in the Dungeon, its blade was as sharp as ever."
